Ms. Sophia: "I's feelin' mighty low. And when I seed you - I knowd they is a God. I knowd they is a God." |
Earlier today, I was definitely feeling might low. I'm not quite where I want to be in life, but then again, are any of us? I'm part of the generation of children after the baby-boomers. The previous generation blazed trails, knocked down walls and ceilings, and burned bras, all for the sake of gender equality and social relevance within society. Folks of my generation, Gen X, were born during a time after the end of turbulent Sixties, but before the invention of the word "Reganomics". It was a good time to be born and live....the foxy, get-with-it Seventies! A time of celebration, single-life living in "new-fangled" apartment complexes, and partying in discos. Our parents were free, enjoying life and off the chain! However, they were also making a way for us to grow up and not have to fight the establishment as they had to.
Well, here I am nearing my middle ages of life and I'm STILL not where I want to be. Sure, I secured the education and beyond, earning a post-graduate degree, but something is still not quite right. I'm not knocking down doors and blazing trails. I'm not creating anything useful for future generations to use and benefit from, well...at least not collectively with my generation. You haven't heard much about Gen X doing anything "monumental" or Earth-shattering. We're just here....chillin'....livin' & workin'. Is it because our folks and their folks did so many great things before us, like sit-ins, marches, fighting dogs and fire hoses? Sure, there are plenty of doctors, lawyers and Indian chiefs in Gen X, but there's aren't many groups or organizations of people leading other for social change. I'm not sure what the decrease of change is attributed to, but we're just not quite there. Yeah, we've got a Black president, and you can thank many of my generation for voting him in, but what are WE doing? Will we have a president to rep Gen X in the future (as you know, Barack is older and a part of the Baby Boomers!), or will we continue to be lead by old folks with older ideas?
ANYHOO! So I'm thinking about all of this earlier today, and I'm like....what have I done outwardly and INwardly to make changes? In a word, nuffin! I haven't even tried to make a change with anything going on around me, because I'm too busy trying to change ME! Even with my advanced degree, I'm still tackling menial tasks at work and not doing much in my spare time. I'm even thinking of going back to school for another post-grad degree, but why?!? It is because people aren't honoring the degrees that I have? Is it because I want to DO more with my education to BE more? Do I have TOO MUCH ambition, or not enough ,similarly to my generational cohorts? UGH!!!!
Then, while perusing Facebook before beginning my work day, I noticed a little gem from Joel Osteen Ministries:
God has already prepared the opportunities you need. Don't accept defeat, depression or lack. Supernatural promotion and increase will seek you out. Just keep honoring God and blessing others. What God-given opportunities have come your way?
Man, you know what...God always provides what you need when you need it! Doesn't He?!? I'm not going to get into the sheer deepness of this, but I will say that I've realized though Osteen's saying that we are where we need to be and we're all doing just what we need to be doing....at this very moment. I WAS feeling mighty low, but I know that I am what I am, and that's all that I am! Bigger and better will come down the pipe for me and I'll be ready. Who knows, maybe I am preparing for future generations and just don't realize the specifics of it! Regardless if we Gen X'ers are the "apathetic generation", or not, we're all here for a reason. Make your mark and prepare for the future, because it's coming whether we like it or not!
